Rural communities are home to 19 percent of Americans. The open space and lack of congestion can be attractive to many; however, rural-living is not without challenges.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, employment and economic recovery in rural areas is lagging. NeighborWorks America is committed to supporting rural communities.
Financial counseling and micro loan help Florida farmers grow profits

Farmers Calvin and Caria Hawkins wanted to take their farm to the next level, but didn’t know how. Through a special program that offers education and customized loans, NeighborWorks organization Wealth Watchers helped the Hawkins learn how to make their farm competitive and successful.
Keeping rural residents in New York ‘safe and sound’
A manufactured house set in a rural environment
Manufactured homes are often the housing of choice for many people in rural communities. However, rehab and proper weatherization can become a financial burden for homeowners. Without sufficient funds, these types of repairs can be neglected for years. Our network member RUPCO turned a $128,500 grant into hope for families by replacing seven manufactured homes in desperate need of indoor repairs.

National Night Out

Aug. 2 is National Night Out, a national campaign to make communities safer through stronger police-community
partnership and neighborhood camaraderie. Many NeighborWorks organizations are participating in local events and you can join too. Check your city or town website to find an event near you. You can also contact your nearest NeighborWorks organization at NeighborWorks.org/Local.
