Creating places of opportunity
Throughout 2016, NeighborWorks America has examined best practices for creating economic opportunity for everyone. During our NeighborWorks Training Institute in Detroit, we held the third in a four-part symposia series on this issue. Hundreds of community development professionals joined us to learn more about how we can make all communities places of opportunity.
Here’s a taste of what was shared and how members of our network are putting those principles into action.

Everyone agrees that Detroit has come a long way since 2013, when it filed the largest municipal bankruptcy case in U.S. history. But as the speakers and participants in the NeighborWorks Training Institute’s Aug. 10 symposium made clear, the true story of what led to the city’s decline and to what extent and why it is rebounding today depends on who you talk to.
Read this blog post about the symposium, and the larger implications of who “owns” a city’s story. |

What's working on the ground |

In 2015, NeighborWorks organizations in Michigan generated nearly $45 million in direct investment and assisted more than 3,000 individuals and families with affordable housing.
Our network member Southwest Solutions has completed $120 million in affordable housing and commercial real estate development in Detroit. Some of the work being done on the ground can be a model for other cities around the country. Watch this video to learn more. |
