Disability Employment Awareness Month

Finding good employment and affordable housing is important for all of us, but it can be especially challenging for those with disabilities. A recent infographic report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that nearly 22 percent of Americans have some kind of disability, including 13 percent with mobility impairment, 6.5 percent with difficulty living independently and 4.6 percent with visual impairment.

These types of challenges can make it very difficult to find and hold jobs and to obtain accessible and affordable housing. In this issue, we highlight the challenges and present examples of how the NeighborWorks network is helping people with disabilities find affordable housing.

People with disabilities make up a disproportionate percentage of extremely low-income households, and are far more likely to pay upwards of 50 percent of their income on housing. This report from the Technical Systems Collaborative and the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities Housing Task Force explores national social security income and housing data.
