New NeighborWorks America housing survey shows hope despite challenges
Green circle reading: More than 50 percent of Americas with student loans say the debt is an obstacle to homeownership.
According to a new NeighborWorks America housing survey, 89 percent of adults say homeownership is an “important” part of the American Dream. However, student loan debt, a complicated mortgage process and high rents are keeping many prospective first-time homebuyers from putting out the welcome mat.

Fortunately, NeighborWorks and our network of organizations support a variety of programs that help people reach their homeownership goals.
Student loan debt closes door on homeownership
Graphic including statistics from the annual housing survey.
NeighborWorks’ fourth annual housing survey shows that student loan debt is one of the biggest barriers to homeownership for many Americans.

According to the newly released NeighborWorks America Housing Survey, of the people who reported that they were saddled with student loan debt, more than half said it was “somewhat or very much” an obstacle to homeownership.

Overall affordability was also problematic. Only 45 percent of those surveyed believe where they live is affordable for first-time homebuyers.
Affordable housing offered for Georgia’s ‘invisible homeless’
A black and blue cottage.
Georgia is one of the poorest states in the country, and many of its residents are senior citizens forced to spend much of their limited income on housing.

In Columbus, many older residents live in substandard housing. However, because they have a place to live, they are not classified as homeless under federal definition and thus cannot receive public assistance. Read how our network member NeighborWorks Columbus is helping elderly residents move from substandard housing to new cottages.
