Working to keep America's veterans safe and secure at home

Of the 22 million U.S. veterans, nearly 1.5 million are at risk of becoming homeless. Many of the other estimated 12 million struggle to maintain the homes they do own. As we celebrate our former service members this Veterans Day we highlight some of the work the NeighborWorks network is doing to ensure veterans and service members have safe and affordable housing wherever they live.
Housing repair program honors PA veterans

For many aging veterans, home maintenance and repairs can be a challenge. Network member Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Berks found a solution for its community. The group formed a partnership with local nonprofits, government agencies and volunteers to help veteran homeowners in need. Neighborhood Partnership Housing Services provides many veterans and service members opportunities that facilitate homeownership. One local soldier and his family, who purchased their first home with NPHS help, wrote a letter to express their thanks.

How do you get youth to care about local history?

In Troy, New York, the local elementary school wanted its students and faculty to connect more to the broader community. At the same time, NeighborWorks network member TRIP wanted to build on its relationship with the schools. What they came up with was a win-win.
