Removing tax time obstacles

More than 153 million individual tax returns will be filed with the Internal Revenue Service this year. Filing taxes can be challenging for many, but for tax payers with low-and-moderate incomes and seniors it can be especially difficult. Many of our network organizations offer free services that help taxpayers get the most out of their returns.

For many farmers, filing taxes can be a particular challenge—in part because of the distance they must travel to take advantage of prep services and accountants. The IRS is reaching out to people in rural communities to ensure they are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and actually claim it. NeighborWorks network member Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corp. has offered tax-prep services for more than a decade. About one-third of those who file receive the EITC.
Partnership provides tax prep in Michigan

NeighborWorks network member Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (HFHM) is working with multiple partners to provide tax-preparation assistance to households that may otherwise use costly (and sometimes predatory) services. Volunteers have helped nearly 140 people receive almost $500,000 in tax refunds and credits. This month, Habitat and Fifth Third Bank will use the bank’s “eBus” to provide tax-prep services on the road.
