Whether you call him dad, papa, father or pops, every year in June we celebrate the special men in our lives on Father’s Day. The holiday did not become official until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.

The NeighborWorks network of more than 245 groups throughout the country is committed to supporting families. Here’s a look at how some organizations are helping fathers be successful.

When a divorce or other crisis occurs, all sorts of assistance is needed to help family members stabilize and flourish. NeighborWorks member Hawaii Home Ownership Center helped a divorced dad and his son find, finance and move into their own home.

Program helps Texas father find new house and career

Patrick Martinez knew he would have to make some changes in his life when he was awarded custody of his 3-year-old daughter. He needed to start with finding a safe place to live and a way to support his family. He turned to network member Foundation Communities for help. The group connected him with its support program for low-resource families, and now Martinez not only has a new home but also a new career.

Billy Gibby and his family stayed in run-down apartments with leaking pipes or cheap hotels with bed bugs. Then NeighborWorks Alaska came into his life and helped him make a fresh start.

When social service agencies started telling network member Aeon they couldn’t place some of their neediest clients in the Minneapolis nonprofit’s affordable housing developments, the organization decided to join with others in the area to explore how to be more inclusive. Read how the collaboration is taking an evidence-based approach to re-examining standards for tenants who are ex-offenders.
