Community-based approaches to battling opioid and substance abuse |
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, substance abuse costs the country billions of dollars every year in crime, lost work productivity and health care. The rise in prescription opioid abuse in particular carries a high price tag, costing the United Stated about $78.5 billion dollars a year and accounting for about half of all hospital emergency department visits related to drug misuse. In fact, President Trump recently declared the opioid crisis a national emergency.
In this issue, we highlight how members of the NeighborWorks network are helping individuals and families battle substance abuse. |

Housing helps break the drug cycle |
Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership, a member of the NeighborWorks network, soon will offer stable housing for parents who are recovering from substance abuse. The court will refer parents who are at risk of homelessness to the new apartment complex with their children.
Breaking this cycle will reduce costs to the criminal justice and health systems and provide a safe environment for children. |
