Giving thanks for our small businesses and communities

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are reminded of all we have to be grateful for, from friends and family to home and community. Many of us also will kick off the start of the holiday shopping season on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. At NeighborWorks America, we support small businesses because of the critical role they play in supporting local economies and thriving communities. In this issue, we talk about how NeighborWorks members help strengthen these businesses to help them make a broader impact.

The effects of Hurricane Harvey in Houston are well known, but the small towns nearby also need support to recover. NeighborWorks member BCL of Texas, under the leadership of CEO Rosa Ríos Valdez, worked with the Economic Development Team of Wharton, TX, to connect local businesses with Federal Home Loan member banks to provide disaster relief totaling $220,000 in FHLB grants to allow the businesses to recover and repair.

To support entrepreneurship, NeighborWorks member Nuestra Comunidad partnered with Epicenter Community to launch Accelerate Boston. The program supports the creative economy by encouraging potential business owners to compete for a $10,000 cash prize.
